SISTER ALICE FRANCIS YOUNG, a professor of child development at St. Joseph’s College for 43 years and a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph since 1932, died on July 6, 2016.
Born more than a year before the opening of St. Joseph’s College for Women, S. Alice was 101. A driving force in the creation of New York City’s first Head Start program, S. Alice also appeared in a series of TV programs that focused on the moral and religious development of children.
S. Alice earned a bachelor’s in education and psychology from St. Joseph’s College in 1940, later earning master’s degrees from the Teachers College-Columbia University and the University of Minnesota. She lived a long and fruitful life, educating thousands of St. Joseph’s students and establishing a positive influence on the lives of many other young people across metropolitan New York.
